Advisory Board Member – My name is Melissa Barnett, I am employed with the Children Youth & Families Department as a Juvenile Probation Officer. My home town is Hobbs, NM. My career in Criminal Justice began as a Detention Officer at the Lea County Detention Facility where I worked supervising both adults and juveniles. In California I also served at-risk youth at a California Juvenile Facility and a counseling center. Upon my return from California I was employed for the Lea County DWI Misdemeanor Compliance Program.
My educational background includes a Bachelor’s Of Science in Criminal Justice from Eastern New Mexico University, a Certificate of Completion in Human Services Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies from Ruidoso Branch Community College, An Associate of Arts and an Associate of Science from New Mexico Junior College.
I embrace the challenges in working with at- risk youth and their families while recognizing that community safety is a priority. In working with this special population it is important to realize that each youth and family have their own unique circumstances, when addressing different needs and challenges. I strive to assist these families in overcoming said challenges in hope of a different outcome.
In my leisure time I enjoy being at home with my husband and pets. I have a passion for animals. I contribute and encourage others to contribute to non-profit organizations which aid with animal care. I also enjoy gardening and tackling at- home projects with my husband. I have two children whom I adore and am very proud of. Traveling and visiting places I have never been are also at the top of my list.
My life motto is “life is what you make of it” because you always have a choice and nothing is impossible.
